Thursday afternoon, January 15th, the Fulda School Board held a Special School Board Meeting to consider and/or approve items related to the building project.
Great news was shared in regards to the Roofing Bids. The estimated cost of the roofing was 4 million dollars, and three companies submitted bids for a Fully Adhered Rubber Membrane Roofing System. The low bid submitted was 2.34 million dollars. This was 1.66 million dollars under the estimated cost of a Built-Up Multi-Layer Roofing System. Planned uses for this potential savings from the roofing will be to fund the removal of the existing Elementary School Building, and the adding back of 1,368 square feet of classroom space that had been recommended to be reduced due to estimated cost concerns.
The School Board did not act on accepting the low roofing bid at this time. The School Board has thirty days from January 14th to accept this bid.
No other board action concerning the proposed building project took place.

I would like to give you an update on the school building project. Since the summer of 2024 the Fulda School District has been working with a facility design and project management team from inBYLT, and Architects from DeVetter Design Group on both the design and costing estimates for the building project. The initial design process involved members of the Fulda community as well as school district staff. As you may recall, the building design concept presented to, and passed by the voters included 30,340 square feet of new construction and 15,710 square feet of renovated area. Around mid-December there was a proposed project design presented to the School Board Building Design Committee - the next task was to estimate the costs for this proposal.
At the January 12th Fulda School Board Meeting a cost estimate presentation was made virtually by the inBYLT Project Managers and Architects from DeVetter Design Group. We have a set expense budget for this project and unfortunately the proposed project’s estimated costs were greater than the budgeted amount. Options were presented to the School Board to reduce the estimated costs. The School Board and Administration expressed their frustration towards the situation and are opposed to sacrificing the desired elements of the building project. Project cost containment, while maintaining the quality and functionality of the building, is an item that the School Board Members and District Administration must address and they are frustrated that the proposal reduced the new construction by 2,293 square feet and moved several of the building design elements to an Alternative Bid status (meaning that they are not part of the proposed bid package).
The only portion of the building project to be let out for bids is the roofing. The bidding process for the roofing portion of the project closed on January 14th, we asked for bids on two roofing options - a built-up roof and an adhered rubber.
As of this time the School Board has not approved a building design, nor have any other calls for bids gone out. Once the design is accepted by the School Board we will be sharing updated drawings and project specifics and advertising for construction bids. The School Board has the authority to accept or reject any or all bids, and you can be assured that they take this responsibility seriously.
